Fake Fox-Hunting in Italy

The hunt was fake.  No foxes were harmed.  The foxhounds, horses and humans all had a blast.

I didn’t even know Italy had fox hunting.  I was rather surprised when I found this offered at Il Due Laghi through my equestrian travel agent, In The Saddle and went for the hunt in November 2012.  Il Due Laghi is an organic cheese and veg producer, only about 60 km north of Rome.  The owner is a former basketball star, an equestrian and an all-around animal lover who is the Master of the Hunt.  Given he has created a refuge for stray dogs and retired horses, he trained the dogs to pretend to hunt a fox and there was no fear of terrorizing any real foxes.

Here are some pics of the countryside we enjoyed during our hacks.  It’s quite a menagerie with fields of retired horses, the dogs tagging along and occasionally having to yield to sheep.

The towns within 2-30 minutes drive of Il Due Laghi are charming.  Here are two pictures of the nearby Anguillara.  I think the one of that Tarja took of Matteo (from Il Due Laghi) and myself makes us look like we’re in a Woody Allen film.

The riding property is Il Due Laghi.  It has hotel rooms, a restaurant, daily hacks and schooling as well as the hunt during the season.

I booked through the equestrian travel agent In The Saddle.
